Welcome to the 39th big issue of Pure Excitement Comics, the Web's longest running Golden Age reprint fanzine! This issue marks the beginning of my plan to feature characters new to Pure Excitement Comics every month until our big 50th anniversary issue. Here's an overview of this month's features:

Black Owl

Character(s): The Black Owl
Publication: Prize Comics No. 19
Publication Date: February 1942
Publisher: Feature Publications, Inc.
Known Appearances: Prize Comics No. 1 featured the debut of a hero known as "K the Unknown." Starting with the second issue, the character, in reality society playboy Doug Danville, instead adopted the identity of the Black Owl. In his initial appearances as the Black Owl, Danville dressed in a tuxedo with a strange mask. With issue No. 7, however, legendary artist Jack Kirby took over the feature and the Black Owl was given a more superhero-type costume. In issue No. 33, Danville decided to give up the costume hero gig and joined the military. Starting with the next issue, Walt Walters, father of Yank & Doodle, donned the costume of the Black Owl. The strip was then retitled "Yank & Doodle featuring the Black Owl," and it ran through issue No. 68. This is the first adventure of the earlier Black Owl to appear in the pages of Pure Excitement Comics.
